A lengthy title, so let’s break it down. Two channels means a single diversity receiver that receives and outputs signals from two separate beltpack transmitters. Those signals are pure digital for transmission and are only converted back to analogue when output to your recorder or camera using the included XLR or 3.5mm cables. Or you can keep them in the digital domain and output them over USB-C to your phone or computer. The digital signals can also be recorded internally to each transmitter as a 32bit float file onto the included microSD card. 32bit has such wide headroom that even if you badly screw up your gain settings and have low or overloaded signals transmitted back to the receiver, you’ll likely be able to get useable audio off the onboard backup recording. At FRANK we’ve replaced the serviceable lapel mics that came with the transmitters with industry standard Sanken COS-11 microphones to really let these units shine. If you are recording audio onboard as a backup, it helps to have timecode on those recordings to sync it back with the video. You can set timecode with the app, or the transmitters can receive wireless timecode signals from our Deity TC-1 timecode boxes as well (not included).
These units have a number of smart features that bring wireless into the modern age. For instance the app can use GPS to determine where you are in the world and consequently what frequencies are available to you. It can then scan the available bandwidth and assign the two best frequencies to the system automatically without having to physically access the units (which will make your talent happy). You can also trigger the onboard recording remotely using the app as well as set transmission power. The included whip antennas attach with standard SMA connectors which means they can be replaced with external shark fin antennas so the receiver can be integrated into larger professional systems. The receiver and transmitters both run on AA batteries, and we include 8 lithium ion rechargeable AA batteries in their own storage/charging case plus a USB-C charger. We also now include hardwire adaptors. If you have wireless problems for whatever reason (no spectrum, bad interference, batteries run out, etc) you can simply plug the COS-11 into one of these adaptors, run an XLR cable to your recorder, turn on its phantom power and you have an excellent hardwire lapel microphone.
