About

If you’ve ever watched a Youtube personality, it’s very likely you’ve seen them using this mic or something similar.  This is a super flexible 2 channel wireless kit.  Each of the transmitters are slightly larger than a 9 volt battery and cram an incredible amount of features into that space.  You can plug an lapel mic (Extra) into each transmitter and use them as a belt pack like a traditional wireless, but the units are so small that many people just clip the actual transmitter to their shirt and use its internal microphone.  They have a clip on the back and they can also use a magnet to be “stuck” to clothing.  They are of course visible on camera but a large segment of the Vlogosphere doesn’t care, they are only trying to get better sound than a camera’s onboard mic.  If you are outside in the elements, each transmitter comes with a “furry” windscreen that slides on to lessen wind noise.  The receiver has a touchscreen and dial to control not only itself but each transmitter as well.

Using Bluetooth, the transmitters can send audio directly to a phone so they don’t even need a receiver for short range uses.  Or if you want to be more traditional, they use WiFi-like circuitry to send digital audio to the two channel receiver from up to 800’ away.  Like all WiFi devices, if there is interference it will switch seamlessly to any other available channel without any operator input.  If you do run into wireless problems, each transmitter has 32bit float internal recording so you can be the hero by rescuing the audio after the shoot.  They also can enable onboard noise reduction circuitry which isolates the human voice and tries to eliminate annoying background clutter.

The units have a 6 hour battery life and when not being used, much like Apple Airpods they slide into their storage case which itself has an internal battery to recharge them.  The case’s battery will recharge them 3 times before it has to have its battery topped up using the included USB-C power supply.  Designed for Vlogging cameras it has a 3.5mm stereo cable to get its two channels to your camera, or it has USB-C and Lightning adaptors if you want to plug the receiver directly into your phone instead of using Bluetooth.  DJI has also made a hotshoe interface specific to Sony cameras.  Many Sony cameras have a “smart” hotshoe connection where the hotshoe has electrical connections and isn’t just a mounting slot.  Using those connections the camera can power the receiver, but more importantly the receiver can pass its two channels of digital audio directly through to the camera for easy onboard recording without having to use the external 3.5mm cable.  It makes for a very compact way of getting two channels of quality audio into your compact run & gun mirrorless camera setup, perfect if you are on a gimbal.
