About
If you just wanted a fast 50mm prime lens for full-frame Sony Emount cameras this would do fine, but it’s real claim to fame is its tilt capability. Before I explain what that is, please note that this is not a tilt-shift lens, it only tilts. So what does that mean? It means that the body of the lens physically tilts relative to the plane of the sensor. The effect of this is that regardless of depth of field, most of the image is out of focus, with only a very narrow slice of the image plane being in focus. Have a look at the photo of the beach in the promo picture to the left. It’s daytime so even though this is a f1.4 lens, normally if some of the beach is in focus it would mainly all be in focus. By shifting the lens, it applies normal focus and depth of field only to a narrow slice of the frame. In addition to tilting the plane of focus, the lens can physically rotate 90º so you can select the angle where focus will be present in the scene. If you look at the beach scene again you’ll see that the plane of focus follows the shoreline for that reason. The most common use of this effect is to make life size scenes look as though they were miniatures shot with a “normal” lens, but it can also be helpful in advertising when you want a product to stand out from its background.
