About

Our 600D’s were (and are) real workhorses, but the D stands for daylight and more and more renters are expecting bi-colour lights.  When clients are just in from out of town or haven’t had time to do a location scout, they want maximum flexibility to tackle whatever might be waiting for them on set, and this Amaran has the power and capability to take on surprises.  Amaran has taken their previous colour engine and expanded the blue and red ranges while adding an indigo emitter for even better skin tones.  The light has controls for adding or subtracting green from its CCT settings.  For interviews, we are packaging it with Amaran’s Octa Dome 120 softbox.  This 4′ wide softbox has both an inner and outer diffusion baffle for extra soft light and an eggcrate to limit spill.  It folds flat for easy packaging in its case and then quickly “springs” into shape by snapping a locking lever into place.  For its substantial width, the softbox is relatively shallow in depth.  If you aren’t using the 660C for interviews, outside of its bi-colour capabilities this is a full RGB light source.  We package it with the stock 45º reflector, and we include Amaran’s fresnel and 4-leaf barn doors.  The fresnel can be zoomed from 45º down to a narrower 15º beam if you need to punch through a window (or hit that disco ball).  The accessories all mount using a standard Bowens mount, so in theory it should be able to use any Bowens accessory as long as they are engineered to handle the heat of a light drawing 750 watts with a deep COB unit.

A couple things we particularly like?  The rear screen is colour, very clear and simple to use.  Like all modern LED’s, the light has numerous effect modes and can be controlled by Amaran’s app which can link up using NFC just by touching your phone to the light.  The dial that adjusts the settings is a “smart” dial.  It has individual click-stops for fine adjustment, but if you give the dial a spin, an internal motor will keep the dial spinning to cover large adjustments until you grab it and stop it.  Sounds a little strange here in text but it’s very intuitive in practice.  By far our favourite thing?  The ballast is built into the light itself, there is no huge external box you have to plug into the wall and then run a head cable to.  Like our Nanlux Evoke 150C’s, you plug one 15′ cable from the wall to the light head and you are in business.  Simple and quick!   The RGB nature of the light lets it cover all the possible bases, and we are packaging it with that ethos in mind.  We are sending it out with the 45º reflector if you need to blast it through an 8’x8′, the fresnel if you need an even harder/tighter beam, and a 4′ quick-erect softbox with double baffles for super soft light, and all of that will ship in one case.
