A standard of the industry, this is very similar to our Camtram dolly, but much quicker to setup. The slider carriage comes with 4 pivoting wheels at each corner, and the wheels are pre-spaced to be the same width as the included pipe holders or “track ends” if you prefer. You can bring your own pipe, or we supply 1.5″ schedule 40 pipe at $0.50/per foot. The pipe is clamped securely into the pipe holders with finger tightened wingnuts. Once that “track” is assembled it can either be laid on the ground or rested on Apple Boxes, but the real selling point on the Dana Dolly is that the pipe holders have 2K spuds on them. By placing the track ends into regular low boy stands, you have easily transportable stable bases that are height adjustable. Regular low boy stands are fine, but we were finding that customers needed to get just a bit lower, so we bought Matthews slider stands that are specially made. They have two Rocky Mountain legs for levelling (instead of the usual single leg), are quite a bit lighter, and start off about 8″ lower than normal Low Boys. Stands for the dolly are a la carte.
The wheeled slider carriage is by design a flat Mitchell base, and then there are adaptor rings for 150mm, 100mm and 75mm bowl heads. Just the process of tightening the knob on your chosen size of tripod head secures the corresponding bowl mount. There is a “problem” with this method though. While it does locks a bowl head to the slider carriage, this method of fastening eliminates the reason for a bowl head: quick levelling of the camera. Using this standard method, you have to level the whole slider in order to level the camera, which is not ideal from a quickness stand point. That’s why we’ve added Dana Dolly’s permanent bowl mounts in 100mm and 150mm sizes. These mount to the carriage base independently with screws and keep the rounded bottom that you’re used to, allowing your bowl head to make fine adjustments to reach level.
3/8″ and 1/4′ threaded holes abound on the carriage surface for accessories, and the kit comes with an arm and swivel to mount a small monitor. If you are using longer pipe, there is a support that lifts the center of the pipe using a third stand (extra). The dolly carriage, the track ends, the bowl adaptors and monitor mount all come in a reasonably compact hard case. All you need to decide is whether you need the Matthews slider stands (or perhaps some apple boxes?) and what lengths of pipe you want.
