This little on-camera mic has three things going for it: small size, smart design and unique technology. This is primarily designed to mount on mirrorless cameras to be a better source of sound than their onboard mics.
It’s about the size of a tube of lipstick, mounts into your camera’s hotshoe and its suspension can easily cushion any vibrations.
That short length means minimal rear overhang, and unlike many competitors in this space, the connection comes out the side of the mic and not the rear. No rear connection means it’s not hitting you in your forehead if you ever need to hold the camera up to your face to use the viewfinder rather than the screen.
Finally, as mentioned it has its 3.5mm output on the side but it also has a 3.5mm input on the side. Why is that important? Most mirrorless cameras and DSLRs don’t allow you to separate their two tracks of recorded audio so when you plug in an external 3.5mm audio source such as this it takes over both of the available channels when really, since it’s not a stereo mic, it only needs one. That’s where that input comes into play. You can plug a second 3.5mm source into this Deity mic (perhaps a wireless receiver?) and it will split the channels internally: the mic on one channel and the second source on the camera’s second channel. Nifty.
