About

It’s hard to believe that they have made an even smaller two channel wireless than their Mic 2, but DJI have now come out with the DJI Mic Mini.

Like its “big” brother, each of the transmitters has an omni-directional mic built into them and they are small enough that you can simply clip them to your collar, or using included magnets “stick” them to the material of your shirt.  They come with attachable furry windscreens to minimize distortion if you are in a breeze.  While the Mic 2 transmiiters have a 3.5mm jack to add a lapel mic, these Mic Mini transmitters have eliminated that option to focus on being as tiny as possible.  It’s hard to believe that they have crammed a mic, wireless radios and a battery big enough for 10  hours of use into such a small space.  Using DJI’s app, you can activate a limiter to try and keep loud levels useable, and the transmitters also have two levels of noise cancellation to decrease background distractions and make vocals stand out.  Unlike the Mic 2, the Mini’s transmitters do not feature onboard recording.

I mentioned radios, and each transmitter has two: they can use bluetooth to transmit directly to your phone, or they use wifi to come back to the packaged receiver.  The receiver has a 3.5mm cord to interface with your DSLR, and you can decide whether the two transmitters are ouput as two mono channels, or mixed into one track.  If the pre-amps on your mirrorless camera are not great, the receiver’s volume knob can increase its clean output so you don’t have to crank up the noisy input of your camera.  DJI’s smart hotshoe adapter for Sony cameras is not available for the Mini’s receiver.  We package USB-C and Lightning adapters that let you physically connect the receiver to your smart phone or laptop.  When the receiver is plugged in over USB, it charges its onboard battery.

The carrying case has its own internal battery that can re-fill the batteries of the transmitters and receiver three times before everything has to be plugged into the included USB-C power supply.   We are pricing both DJI systems the same.  If you need onboard 32bit backup recording and the option of using lapel mics, then the Mic 2 has you covered.  But if you prioritize simplicity and low size/weight over everything else, this Mic Mini system is the way to go.
