About
DJI’s Osmo line has a sporadic history with us. The earlier models rented in small numbers, with limited use scenarios. The Pocket 3 is designed for more mainstream usage. Reasons? It now has a 1-inch sensor which makes the images a little more cinematic in their depth of field and dynamic range. Previous models had a postage stamp screen on them which made seeing what you were shooting a challenge. The Pocket 3 not only has a useable two inch 16×9 screen, a simple flip puts the screen (and the camera head, and the aspect ratio of the recorded files) into either landscape or portrait mode making it the darling of the Instagram-O-Sphere. I think the third feature that has made it take off is its integration with DJI’s popular microphone systems. It has a two-channel receiver built-in that can easily be used with DJI’s clip-on wifi mics such as the Mic 2 or their Mic Mini. This makes it the ultimate “walking around” camera: quality audio for a host and guest with stabilized 4K footage in a simple to use package.
Outside of those primary benefits, the camera has a number of other useable features. It can shoot 4K at 120 frames per second. That large sensor means much better images in low light scenarios. It can shoot in 10bit LOG for real colour grading options in Post. It can become a webcam that keeps you in frame automatically while connected over USB-C. Having that robotic gimbaling head enables some other interesting options. It can actively swivel and track subjects as they move through the frame. Timelapse recordings can become “Motionlapse” recordings by setting a start and end point, and the camera will pan and tilt while doing the timelapse. Stills can become super high-resolution panoramic shots as the camera will take a photo and then pan and tilt to the borders of that shot and take a second photo and so on, and the software in the camera will automatically stitch all those shots together into one huge photo.
