About

HDMI is a consumer standard that was essentially developed to allow Blu-Ray players to hook up digitally to flatscreen TV’s.  But that meant that HDMI chipsets were made in bulk and therefor were cheap compared to professional standards such as HD-SDI, so like it or not HDMI has become ubiquitous in the professional production world.  But where a good HD-SDI cable can carry a signal over 300′, HDMI struggles to go past 25′ and with 4K signals the disadvantages of copper wiring become even greater.  So what to do?  Inexpensive cameras and switchers use HDMI and that’s not going to change, but if you can’t place your camera more than 25′ away from your switcher, coverage of your sporting event suffers.  That’s where these cables come in.  One advantage of HDMI is that in addition to the signal itself, HDMI ports provide a small amount of power from the device they are hooked up to.  These cables use that power to enable circuitry that converts the video signal from electricity to light, and then back again at the other end.  Fiber Optics can literally run for kilometers with no signal degradation.  Our cables are a more manageable 150 feet long (we also have a limited number of 300′ ones) and can handle HD and 4K signals with ease.  One caveat with these cables is that they are uni-directional: the ends are labelled as Source (your camera) and Display (your switcher).  One last thing to remember is that if your strip them down, ultimately these cables have glass fibers at their core, so please…play nice!
