About
A standard in the industry, Menace Arm kits allow you to extend a light fixture out and over an area where you would otherwise see the stand in the shot. Great for scratch/back lights, or getting a lantern over a poker table.
It’s a bit hard to explain how the kit works, but essentially it allows you to hang a light fixture off one end of a pipe, and then counterbalance that light’s weight on the other end of the pipe. If you look at the photo, it gives you a better idea of what’s involved. There are many manufacturers of these kits, we went with Kupo for a couple reasons. All of the points that need tightening in the build of the kit have handles rather than counting on a hex wrench. The Kupo kit includes a pipe joiner. Rigging a single pipe is ideal, but how many renters can fit a 20′ pipe in their hatchback? By using say two 8′ pieces of pipe, the rig is much more useable. The Kupo kit’s fixture end has the option for either a Baby or Junior light, and it has two Baby pins at that end. This allows you to attach either size of light, and then secure a flag or diffusion frame via a grip arm attached to the second Baby pin. The other end has hooks to suspend counterbalancing sandbags.
The kit includes a heavy duty Mombo Combo stand with a Rocky Mountain leg and a 4 1/2″ grip head. The Mombo Combo has thicker walls to take the added weight, a wider base and is required for use with this kit. The kit also includes two ratchet straps to brace the pipe and secure the counterbalance end, as well as a safety chain. What’s known in the industry as 1.5″ schedule 40 pipe (closer to 2″ diameter in reality) is available at $1.00 per foot. Pipe and Sandbags are extra.
