For many years we had a small Lowel 2-Light kit with umbrellas. It was tungsten only and didn’t have a huge amount of output, but for small single subject interviews in controlled lighting conditions it was fine and economical. This is meant to replace that kit but with a modern slant. The fixtures are NANLITE’S FS-60B. This means not only tungsten but daylight too with any mix in between. It means zero heat on the talent, and the ability to be dimmed. The lights come with a detachable intensifier which shapes the light into an even beam while increasing the fixture’s output. Pop the intensifier off and the COB spreads out 180º which is ideal for bouncing off the included umbrellas. There is a clamp for the umbrella on the light’s yoke, so wherever you tilt the light, the umbrella follows. The umbrella is about two feet wide and casts a nice wrapping light for soft shadows. Seven foot tall Matthews kit stands with a proper long top spud and real brakes support things from the ground, or you can use one of the two included scissor clamps to hang a back light from a false ceiling if you have one. Unlike most smaller lights the power supply is built into the fixture head itself so there are no “bricks” hanging off your light stand, and 15 foot long braided power cables mean you may not even need an extension cable. Everything comes together in a compact kit that weighs only 20 pounds (!) and should be eligible as carry on luggage. Soft or hard shadows, bi-colour flexibility, lightweight and inexpensive – just right. Say hello to the new goldilocks kit!
