1′ x 2′ LED lights are a standard size in the industry, but building a ballast into them and having a yoke to mount them generally means they are relatively heavy. Flexible cloth LED mats are lightweight, but building a frame to support them and diffuse them is a pain and time consuming. These PavoSlims combine the best of both those worlds. They are only about a half inch thick but they are solid thanks to the entire backside of the panel being a lightweight extruded aluminum plate. You don’t have to “build” them, they are ready to go right out of the case. If you are OK with the individual LEDs being bare and/or you need maximum output, you can just use the panels like this. Most people want to diffuse the relatively hard light coming off the bare panel though. For that diffusion to have an effect, the diffusion material has to be a certain distance in front of the panel so the fixture appears as one large soft source rather than seeing the individual LEDs. Other mats generally force you to construct a frame structure around the perimeter of the mat and then attach diffusion. Nanlite has a simpler/quicker solution. A softbox can be semi-permanently attached to the panel with velcro. It has spring-steel spars that “pop” the softbox into shape for use, but also allow it to collapse down against the surface of the panel to only the thickness of the cloth for storage. Once the softbox has popped into shape, there is a cloth eggcrate that can velcro into place to limit the spread of the light. There are ¼” threaded holes on each corner. One could screw in eyebolts to hang the lights from ropes, but we have used the holes to thread-in rubberized magnetic pads. This lets you easily “paste” the panel to any magnetic surface such as a steel door. The power cord comes out the bottom rather than the back of the panel and the fixture is completely flat so the mounting possibilities are endless. If you want to place it on its included stand, there is a swivel on a quick-release plate that easily attaches/detaches from the rear surface of the fixture. You can replace the swivel with a 750 Stud that fits into any griphead if you prefer (we include a 2½ griphead). In addition to the factory 8′ head cable, we’ve added a 25′ head cable for when you want to get the light out to the end of a menace arm while keeping the ballast on the ground. The light comes in a very light carrying case with all its accessories.
