This is a medium zoom with roughly the physical size of a full frame lens, but it has been designed from the drawing board to only cover a crop sensor. What that means is approximately an extra stop of light gathering ability compared to zooms with the same relative focal length. This is one of Sigma’s ART series line, which means their very best effort. It uses a hyper sonic focus motor that is comparable in speed and accuracy to Canon’s lenses. Aspherical elements and multi-layer coatings mean a sharp lens with low flare characteristics. This focal range makes it a nice interview lens, and that fast maximum aperture means nice bokeh and a nicely blurred background for those head and shoulders shots.
We are carrying the EF mount, which with a mount adapter, allows it to go onto crop sensor cameras from a number of manufacturers including Canon’s own C70, RED’s Komodo and Sony’s FS7. It will mount directly to crop sensor cameras with a native EF mount such as Canon’s C100 or C300 series. Having said that, this lens and its little brother the 18-35mm were primarily purchased to act as the package lenses that come with our BlackMagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro. One or the other with a 6K, they make a nice natural combo.
