The big news with these lenses? They are one of the first set of anamorphic lenses that are able to autofocus! These are three E-Mount lenses for Sony cameras, and they all have full-frame coverage. They come in 50mm, 75mm and 100mm focal lengths, but by the time you factor in their 1.33 squeeze factor, they are closer to 38mm, 56mm and 75mm. They are relatively fast at T1.8 and we purchased ours with the “neutral” flare option. The iris of each lens can keep the T-stop detents, but almost all people who rent these will be using them for video and will use the switch to “de-click” the iris. The focus ring (and the iris ring) has 0.8 gearing for cinema use if you prefer to forego the autofocus capability. Having said that, the autofocus works quite well but you cannot use the de-squeeze feature within the menu system of the Sony camera and retain autofocus. You must de-squeeze the signal externally in order to retain autofocus capability. This can be accomplished with either a compatible monitor using the camera’s HDMI or SDI output, or you can use Sony’s Monitor & Ctrl application on your iOS or Android device. You can monitor either wirelessly, or on a camera such as the FX3 you can use a direct USB-C connection for full frame rates with zero delay.
We are packaging ours with three 67mm to 95mm adaptor rings that will allow them to be used with our Tilta Mirage clip-on matte box. Talk to us about filter options without a matte box, because half the fun of using anamorphics is to revel in flares, not eliminate them!
