If you are heading to Churchill with an E-Mount camera to make Polar Bear movies (or really, anyplace with animals), this is the lens for you. Sony has made a nice compromise here between size & weight, zoom range and light gathering. All the zooming happens internally so the lens does not physically lengthen, and that also pays dividends with keeping it dust and weather-sealed in inclement shooting conditions. The Direct Drive Super Sonic Wave Motor (DDSSM) autofocus system provides quick, quiet, and precise performance that suits both stills and video applications, and manual focus is linear for a natural feel. The lens can focus down to 8 feet, but if your subject is far away you are able to set distance parameters so the motor doesn’t waste time trying to traverse the whole possible focus range . The lens has Optical Stabilization built-in and if you are using it with a camera that has sensor stabilization the two systems will communicate for even better blur free shots.
The lens is designed to cover full frame sensors but will still work with crop sensors (also termed Super 35mm in the film world) . On a crop sensor the lens is 50% more telephoto, becoming a 300-900mm lens. For an extra $25/day, Sony’s 2x Tele Converter is a natural pairing with this lens. Using it loses you a stop of light but turns this into a 400-1200mm lens on full frame cameras, and a 600-1800mm lens on Super 35mm sized sensors! The front filter thread is 95mm, and we include a UV protection filter as well as a Polarizer. Given the aperture range, you are unlikely to need a variable neutral density filter. If you are using the lens for stills, it makes more sense to attach the lens foot to your tripod. However if you are doing video, the lens foot rotates out of the way and you can use the included Tilta 15mm rod support to take some weight of the camera’s E-Mount, especially if the 2x converter is inline.
