Sometimes known as a doubler or two times extender. Very simply it mounts between the appropriate Sony E-Mount lens and an E-Mount Camera, and doubles the focal length of that lens. Nothing in life is for free though: by doubling the focal length, it loses 2 stops of light gathering ability. The design of the lens means that one side of it physically protrudes past the casing and actually goes inside of the lens that is matched up with it. Only certain lenses are designed to accommodate that, in our case the only E-Mount lens in our collection that this extender works with is the 70-200mm f2.8. With this doubler, that lens essentially becomes a 140-400mm f5.6. All the other functions of the matching lens are intact: autofocus, exposure and Steadi-Shot all function normally. The extender is designed for use with full frame lenses and cameras. On a crop sensor camera, as with any other full frame lens you will get an additional 50% increase in focal length. So, the Sony 70-200mm f2.8 used with this extender on say a Sony FS7 (crop sensor) will in effect become a 210-600mm f5.6 lens. Due to the physical length of this lens + extender, and the fact that you are adding two bayonet mounts into the works, it’s advisable to consider using a rod-based lens support with this combo.
