This camera slots right between our A7slll and our FX9, both in price and in capabilities. It has the same full frame sensor as the A7slll. That means it’s great in low light and is able to record up to 120 frames per second in 4K. Thanks to it’s bigger body it inherits the built-in variable neutral density filters, the full size audio inputs and the timecode input of its big brother the FX9. It also has a 12G professional SDI output in addition to an HDMI connection. To achieve those high frame rates it’s necessary to use CFexpress Type A memory cards, and we include one 160GB card, but we are also including a 320GB card for when you need long continuous record times. Like the FX9, it has a detachable grip handle on the side to hold it and control camera functions such as zoom, aperture, start/stop, etc.
We’ve outfitted our unit with a number of options to allow you to build it up or keep it small. We include a Zacuto flip-up Z-Finder. This augments and strengthens Sony’s own view screen, while allowing an eyecup to be swung in front of it for when you’re in the sun or just need to keep critical focus. Additionally you can choose your preferred baseplate. For those of you that like an “ENG” style rig, we will fit 8Sinn’s shoulder mount baseplate that clips into a VCT-14 quick-release plate. That lets you get it on and off the tripod quickly. The shoulder pad is re-positionably quickly using magnets. Alternatively you can fit Tilta’s dovetail baseplate and we include the Tilta specific dovetail tripod plate. Either baseplate can mount 15mm rods and they have ARRI rosettes.
We also provide maximum flexibility when powering your build. The camera will come with 98wH “native” batteries that fit within the camera’s body. These have a Dtap output which allows one to power an accessory (monitor, video transmitter, on-camera light) in addition to the camera. Alternatively, you can add a Vmount back and use externally mounted 135wH+ Vmount batteries with Dtap outs. Either (but not both) power and baseplate options are included in the price, it’s your prerogative to build it up, or keep it small.
