Even though this is our least expensive camera to rent, its list of capabilities is very impressive. Large sensor cinema cameras have their place, but there are also many scenarios where video cameras are superior. Why? The Z190 has a powered 25x parfocal stabilized zoom lens. Let’s break that down: that zoom range is roughly the equivalent of 28mm to 720mm in the film world. Such a lens doesn’t exist and that range could only be accomplished in the film world by swapping out three to four very large lenses on a cinema camera. Powered means zoom motors are part of the lens, and moves such as pushing in on a face in an interview or following a golf ball are easily accomplished. Parfocal lenses hold focus through the entirety of their zoom range. And stabilization helps to smooth out shots if one is handheld and can’t be on a tripod, which is especially important given the telephoto reach of this camera. The lens has individual rings for focus, iris and zoom. The focus ring can either have a direct connection to the lens so you are turning the actual glass elements when manually focusing, or you can engage the camera’s autofocus system that includes face-tracking technology. When you head outside, the camera has a Variable Neutral Density filter to limit the amount of light coming through the lens. The Z190 creates its image by using a dedicated imaging chip for each of the primary colours of the spectrum (Red / Green / Blue) and it then merges those colours for outstanding fidelity. The three chips and dedicated lens also mean great low light performance and sharp 4K resolution. To record that great image the Z190 has a number of legacy HD codecs in addition to well established 4K codecs that are recognized by all modern editing software. Sony designed the codecs so that they can be recorded onto common SDXC cards, and we are including two 256GB cards that are V60 speed rated, as well as a UHS-ll card reader for speedy offloads. Power wise, the included battery charger can also act as an AC power supply, and we include three batteries that have USB and Dtap outputs for powering external accessories. The Z190 has two professional XLR audio inputs, a timecode connector, an HD-SDI output, and it can send a high resolution UHD (4K) signal out its HDMI port. With Sony’s “Content Browser” app on your phone, you can wirelessly monitor the camera’s image and remotely control certain aspects of shooting such as recording, white balance and zoom/iris/focus settings. For you conference shooters, it will come with the pan arm mountable remote zoom controller with a Record button.
