About

The minimal flange distance of Sony’s mirrorless and F series cinema cameras means that almost any lens from any manufacturer can be attached to their E-Mount with an adaptor.  We’ve taken advantage of this fact by employing Metabones adaptors and our full frame Canon lenses.  This is a good solution: Canon L series glass is world renowned, and getting an extra stop of light out of them with a Speedbooster on an FS7 camera is always a nice bonus.  The advantages outweigh the compromises.  Compromises?  The autofocus doesn’t work and they are a bit on the large side.  Not deal breakers, but there are scenarios where different tradeoffs would be welcome.  All of which is a long introduction to this Tamron zoom: as Goldilocks says, it’s just right.

To begin it’s an E-Mount lens, designed from the outset for Sony mirrorless cameras.  It mounts solidly, and there’s no translation of autofocus or aperture commands: they all work fast and perfectly.  This is helpful on a gimbal where touching the lens isn’t practical, so autofocus performance can be critical.  Secondly, a fresh sheet of paper design with a well chosen zoom range means it was made light and compact.  It’s always hard to tell from a picture but this lens is quite a bit smaller than other comparable spec lenses, with a filter diameter of only 67mm.  Smaller lens elements mean light weight, but modern lens design allows for a still very fast 2.8 maximum f stop.  Finally, this is an internal zoom design, meaning the lens doesn’t physically lengthen as you zoom in and out.  This really impacts gimbal users since they won’t have to rebalance their rig every time they change focal lengths.  So: autofocusing, wide, fast, small, and light.  Just right.
