The big takeaways here are speed and zoom range. 35mm on the wide end is wide enough to be genuinely useable, while 150mm lets you snap in to get ISO shots from the same position, making this a great all-arounder run & gun lens. Usually when a lens has anywhere approaching this range of focal lengths, it has achieved it by sacrificing speed but that’s not the case here. While it’s not the constant aperture that might be preferred when shooting video, it is very fast. It starts at f2.0 on the wide end, and ramps down to a still very fast f2.8 at full telephoto. So, miracle lens then? Well all lenses have trade offs and by prioritizing range and speed, Tamron was willing to give a bit on weight and size. At 1165 grams, it is almost double the weight of our Sony 24-105mm. But that lens doesn’t have anywhere near the telephoto reach and is a bit slower at f4.0 They are the same price so pick the trade-off that suits your needs, or better yet, get both!
Using Tamron’s free lens utility and the built-in USB-C port on the lens, you are able to customize the lens’s controls for the way that you operate. There are three buttons on the lens barrel and you can assign different parameters to each one of them. Since manual focus is “focus-by-wire”, you can set how much twisting the focus ring equates to actual adjustment of focus. Need to cover from MOD to infinity quickly? Make it so a 90º turn of the ring moves through the entire focus range. Need to make incremental adjustments in focus at full telephoto? Set it so the ring has to turn a full 360º to move through the range. You can also set whether the degree of movement is non-linear or matches how much your turn the ring.
