Tilta’s Mirage has been designed from the get-go to work with still camera and cinema lenses no larger than 95mm. That automatically gives it a size and weight advantage over traditional matte boxes. To keep things light, the Mirage can accommodate one traditional 4″ x 5.65″ rectangular filter by clipping the glass directly (without a tray) into the actual matte box hood. It has also been designed from the start to be a clip-on matte box with rotating filters. The Mirage’s rotating filters are housed in trays that have a thumb wheel / gear out the top for turning the filter. So unlike traditional matte boxes that have to be rod mounted where you are turning a part of the matte box to achieve the variable effect, with the Mirage you are turning the filter itself within the matte box. We have a Variable Neutral Density, a Polarizer and a Blue Line effect filter that come in their own trays and can be turned for effect. If you rent our matching Tilta Nucleus Nano 2 lens controls, you can mount a small motor to the filter gear to allow its effect to be controlled wirelessly. The Mirage comes with a number of sizing rings (67mm, 72mm, 77mm, 82mm) that can screw onto the inner threads of various still camera lenses to bring their outer diameter up to 95mm so the Mirage can clip-on to them. Since there are ten lenses in our Vespid Primes package, rather than have you attach/detach the 77mm ring from the lens each time you want to change focal length, we have purchased an independent sizing ring for each of our Vespid primes (except the 16mm which can’t use them) so swapping lenses is relatively painless. It should also be noted that you don’t have to use the Mirage as a clip-on, it comes with an attachment that allows it to fit to standard 15mm rods with 60mm spacing.
