If our Astera Titan RGB tubes are the “King of the Hill” when it comes to RGB tubes, these are the Prince. This kit comes with four 4′ long tubes rather than the eight in the Titan kit. Like the Asteras, they have batteries built into their body and can be run unplugged. This is the second generation of the Pavotubes and they have some new features. The kit comes with DMX cables to integrate them into a 5pin universe, or they can be controlled wirelessly using Nanlite’s app. They have about a third more output than the first generation while at the same time being being more even and diffused if you are going to use them on-camera as an accent light. For mounting the individual tubes, there are transparent plastic clamps that wrap around the tube, and then a 750 stud can screw into that clamp. The stud sticks out perpendicular to the length of the tube, and that stud can then be mounted into any number of regular lighting implements (such as a grip head). There are “bracelets” that go through holes in the end of the tubes in order that they can be hung in various positions. The kit also comes with a plate that allows all four tubes to be grouped together as one big 4′ x 1′ “panel. The plate has a stand mount or if you’re tight on space the gooseneck on the back of the plate easily detaches, allowing the plate to be screwed directly to a wall. At full output the onboard battery is said to last about 2.5 hours, and each of the four lights comes with its own AC power supply to run them indefinitely or charge the onboard battery. Although they are referred to as four foot long, the tubes are actually 46 inches in length.
